Baptism

Picture
Baptism is the first of the Seven Sacraments of the Church; as such it is considered the gateway to salvation. The administration of this Sacrament is divided into two; Infant and Adult Baptism.

Infant Baptism:
In Infant Baptism, the parent(s) are handing over their faith to the child because of the treasure they have found in the faith. For a child to be baptised into the Catholic Faith, the parent(s) must be a regular practising Catholic and it is expected that the family are resident within the parish community and are regular at Masses. For the Infant Baptism, at least a Godparent is required and he/she must be a practising Catholic.

Before any arrangement is made for Infant Baptism here in our parish, the following has to be fulfilled:

  1. At least one of the parents must be a baptised catholic.
  2. The family should be registered in the parish for at least a year and should be active in the parish mass and other events
  3. The family should live within the parish boundary.
  4. If there is a special reason why you want your child/children baptised in this parish, - i.e. that you were baptised or married in this church - then you will need to obtain a letter of permission from your parish priest.   But if this is not the case you need to speak with your own PARISH PRIEST to arrange for the baptism in your OWN PARISH.
  5. When all these are fulfilled, you will need to speak with a member of the baptismal team to make the following arrangement.
    • To complete an application form
    • Arrange for a visit to your home from one of the clergy
    • Attend a pre-baptismal class with the members of the baptismal team.  The child’s godparents should also attend the class.
  1. All baptisms are administered when the above requirements are fulfilled on Saturdays in the parish church.
  2. A request for a replacement of a lost certificate should be done in writing and it will attract a fee of £10.00.
Baptismal Preparation Course:
There is a Baptismal Preparation Course which at least one or both parents is mandatory to attend. This is scheduled for one evening, usually in the mid-week before the Baptism, at 6:45pm for a 7pm start time. For more details, please contact the members of the parish baptismal team.

Adult Baptism and / or Reception into the Catholic Church:
Please refer to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) Programme section
